  • Den Store Danske
    Danish general encyclopedia with many entries on specifically Danish matters.
  • Wikipedia - The Free Encyclopedia
    A general, multilingual encyclopaedia, where especially the English version provides many elaborate entries. Several tests have shown that Wikipedia’s credibility equals that of other general encyclopaedias such as Encyclopaedia Britannica. However, you should pay attention to the credibility of entries concerning controversial topics.

    Website about Danish history created by historians and archaeologists from Aarhus University.
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library
    Among other works, this database contains: Ancient Europe, 8000 B.C. to A.D. 1000, Europe, 1450 to 1789, Europe 1789-1914: Encyclopaedia of the Age of Industry and Empire, Europe Since 1914: Encyclopaedia of the Age of War and Reconstruction, Cold War Reference Library and Encyclopaedia of European Social History.
  • Oxford Reference Online – Premium Collection
    Database containing reference works published by Oxford University Press. The collection covers many subjects, including History. You can choose to search within individual, several, or all works. Provides a good basic understanding of topics and terms.
  • International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences
    Extensive encyclopaedia with social and behavioural sciences’ reference material in the form of scholarly articles. Includes quality bibliographic references.
  • Lexikon des Mittelalters & International Encyclopaedia for the Middle Ages
    Online version of the printed encyclopaedia The Lexikon des Mittelalters (LexMA) and the English supplementary lexicon The International Encyclopaedia for the Middle Ages (IEMA). The online version is closely connected to International Medieval Bibliograph. Thus, when you search through the lexicon, it is often possible to find the relevant bibliographical data with a single click. The articles for which this is not possible are often provided with separate references.
  • Gyldendal og Politikens Danmarkshistorie
    Danish encyclopaedia on Danish history. This is the digital version of the 2nd edition from 2002-05. To each of the 17 volumes, there is a guide to relevant literature and reference material.
  • Dansk Biografisk Leksikon
    Danish biographical encyclopaedia with articles on important and influential Danes throughout history.
  • Salmonsens konversationsleksikon
    Electronic version of Denmark’s classic encyclopaedia.
  • Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
    Encyclopaedia with biographical articles on influential British and non-British men and women who have been of importance in the history of Great Britain and the British Empire. The articles are well-written and detailed. The online version corresponds to the printed encyclopaedia of the same name (with about 60 volumes) but is updated three times a year with new biographies.
  • Encyclopaedia of Islam, Second Edition
    This online version corresponds to the printed version of the encyclopaedia, including the supplementary volume. The encyclopaedia represents the most extensive knowledge about all aspects of the Islamic world – from religion and history to politics and culture.
    A third edition, Encyclopedia of Islam, THREE, is currently in preparation – this will be a completely new work. In the new edition, areas outside of the Middle East will be emphasized to a greater extent than in the previous editions.
  • Dansk Kalender (år 1500- år 2099)
    Online edition of the Danish calendar that makes it possible to find a “correct” date with few clicks. An alternative calendar is “Javascript-Calender

Article databases

  • Bibliotek.dk – Search for articles
    This Danish article database contains Danish newspaper and journal articles. Bibliotek.dk is a national bibliography of all publications in Denmark dating back to 1841. Also contains catalogues of all Danish libraries (both public and academic).
  • Aarhus University Library – Journals and articles
    Here you can find, and search through, the journals that are available through the licences of The Royal Library, Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital.
  • Infomedia
    InfoMedia is a large newspaper database with full-text access to a number of Danish newspapers. The articles date back to around 1990.
  • Web of Science (WoS)
    Multidisciplinary database of high academic quality. WoS is an article database and a citation index with references to articles within all subject categories. WoS contains the following five databases:

    • Science Citation Index Expanded
    • Social Sciences Citation Index
    • Arts & Humanities Citation Index
    • Conference Proceedings Citation Index- Science
    • Conference Proceedings Citation Index- Social Science & Humanities

    At the bottom of the front page, you can limit your search to certain databases. Full-text access is provided to a large part of the material.
    For a given article, all cited references are included, which makes it possible to find articles wherein a specific author or work is cited. Such articles are found through the tab “Cited Reference Search”. Additionally, it is possible to draw out a “Citation Report” which contains an overview of citations and H-index for a given author, research group, institution etc.

    N.B. WoS does not contain information about the “Impact factor” of journals – instead, you can find this information in the database “Journal Citation Reports”.

  • Cambridge Journals
    Provides access to more than 300 full-text journals within a wide variety of subjects. To find journals that relate to specific subjects, click ‘Browse by subject’ – select ‘History’.
  • JSTOR
    Journal database with full-text access to the leading academic journals within all subject areas. NB: it is usually not possible to access the most recent 3-5 volumes, but it is possible to access publications before that. From 2012, e-books are included in the collection.
  • Oxford University Press – Journals
    This database provides full-text access to journals within the scopes of e.g. the humanities and social sciences.
  • Project Muse
    Journal database, founded in 1995, which provides full-text access to peer-reviewed articles of high quality within the scope of the humanities and social sciences. The database contains journals from commercial as well as non-commercial publishers, institutions, and organizations. Provides access to the most recent issues and sometimes to older issues (back issues) as well.
  • Taylor & Francis
    Platform of publications from the publishers Taylor & Francis, Routledge, Psychology Press etc. AUL provides access to the part of the platform which contains a journal database. This grants access to a great number of scholarly journals of high quality, all from the above-mentioned publishers. All subjects are covered, and full-text access is provided to almost all journals in the database.
  • Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
    This database covers topics within the scope of politics, sociology, political history, history, political science, and economics.

Bibliographies

  • Dansk Historisk Bibliografi
    Danish historical bibliography. Database managed by the Royal Danish Library. In the online as well as the printed version, the two periods of 1948-66 and 1077-89 are missing. Continuously updated.
  • Bibliography of British and Irish History
    The Bibliography covers the history of the British world from Roman Britain to the 21st century. It contains a large number of references to books, journal articles and book chapters published from the early 1900s to the current year. You can search by author, title of publication, subject, time period, publication type and dates of publication. The bibliography continues to add new publications to the collection.
  • Historical Abstracts
    This database contains references to articles, books, dissertations, and, to a lesser extent, reviews published from 1960 and onwards. It covers the entire world from 1450 until today, excluding North America.
  • Jahresberichte für deutsche Geschichte
    Comprehensive bibliography with references to articles, dissertations, books and reviews, all about German history, but in all European languages. The database contains all volumes from 1949 and was updated until 2015.

    The ‘Jahresberichte’ was also published during the interwar period. However, these volumes have been digitalized separately and can be found here:  Jahresberichte für deutsche Geschichte aus der Zwischenkriegszeit (Bde. 1-14, Berichtsjahre 1925-1938).

  • History Compass
    This journal publishes detailed overviews of research of selected historical periods and topics. Covers broadly in regard to geographical areas as well as historical periods.
  • Bibliotek.dk
    Joint catalogue of the Danish public and research libraries.
  • Libris
    Joint catalogue of the Swedish public and research libraries.
  • Bibsys
    Joint catalogue of the Norwegian public and research libraries.
  • Anthropology Plus
    Extensive bibliography. Contains references to articles, reports, etc. within the scope of anthropology, archaeology, and adjacent subject areas.

  • Gnomon
    International bibliographic database with references to articles and books within the scope of classical philology, classical history, and archaeology.
  • L’Année philologique
    The most comprehensive international bibliography of research literature on all aspects of classical Rome and Greece. The bibliography covers a wide variety of topics, ranging from literature and language (including early Christian texts and the writing, history, and art of the Church Fathers) to numismatics, epigraphy etc. Also includes references to articles, reviews, books and conference contributions. The bibliography is compiled by The Société Internationale de Bibliographie Classique, edited by Éric Rebillard.
  • Grove Art
    Grove Art Online is the most extensive and reliable art encyclopaedia that you will find in the electronic book market today. The database is based on ‘The Dictionary of Art’, which was published in 34 volumes in 1996.

Dictionaries

  • Ordbogen.com
    Collection of dictionaries which contains Ordbogen.com and Gyldendals Ordbøger. The collection of dictionaries covers a large number of subject areas and languages. The list of all relevant dictionaries is obtained when you search a word.
  • Ordbog over det danske Sprog (ODS)
    An extensive historical dictionary of the Danish language. Includes about 250.000 words and expressions from 1700 to 1950.
  • Ordbog til det ældre danske sprog
    Online edition of O. Kalkar’s dictionary of the Old Danish language. Covers the period from 1300 to 1700.
  • Gammeldansk Ordbog
    Gammeldansk Ordbog (Old Danish Dictionary) is a scholarly dictionary of the Danish language of the Middle Ages. It covers the period from 1100 to 1515.

Newspaper and media

  • Infomedia
    InfoMedia is a large newspaper database with full-text access to a number of Danish newspapers. The articles date back to around 1990.
  • Mediestream
    Available in English. Mediestream provides radio- and TV-shows from selected Danish channels since December 2005.
    Mediestream is continuously updated with the most recent radio and TV, however with a delay of about two weeks. Broadcasts sent before December 2005 can be found on DVD through the library.
    Everyone can search for information about specific broadcasts, commercials etc. At the Royal Danish Library in Aarhus and the Danish Film Institute, you can access all of the material. To gain access from other places, your university must have purchased a licence.
  • Factiva
    Dow Jones Factiva is a unique database which combines an extensive collection of global news with first class business information. Relevant database for searching in global news and on market and business information. Allows access to a maximum of five AUL users at the same time.
  • Statstidende
    Provides legal announcements and information on legal matters. Published by the Department of Civil Affairs, a department under the Danish Ministry of Justice. Only published electronically since October 15th, 2005.
  • Avismikrofilm i Det Kgl. Bibliotek – Aarhus
    Please note: a great part of the microfilmed newspapers are now available online in Mediestream.

  • Annual Bulletin of Historical Literature
    Covers a broad field in regard to periods and geography. All reviews are written by acknowledged scholars. Extensive bibliography with scholarly overviews.
  • Choice
    Contains reviews of books and includes web pages of relevant research libraries. Published by The American Library Association. History is categorized with Social & Behavioral Sciences.
  • Web of Science
    Through ‘Advanced Search’ it is possible to limit the search to reviews (Book Review).
  • JSTOR
    Through ‘Advanced Search’ it is possible to limit the search to reviews.
  • TLS
    The Times Literary Supplement. “has no rivals” (Le Monde)
  • New York Review of Books
    Through ‘Advanced Search’ it is possible to limit the search to reviews
  • H-Net-Reviews
    Provides reviews of books. H-Net’s archives date back to 1993.
  • Reviews in History
    It is possible to limit the search to a specific historical topic. When you have chosen a topic and click ‘Search’, you will find all reviews related to the chosen topic.
  • The Medieval Review
    Famous journal of reviews. Was earlier known as Bryn Mawr Medieval Review. Covers all topics within the scope of the Middle Ages.
  • Reference Reviews
    Provides reviews of reference works.

    Danish reviews printed after 1940

  • Bibliotek.dk
    Registry of reviews of books, albums, theatre productions (also including operas and musicals), movies, exhibits, CDs, videos, discs, and websites. Does not include reviews of concerts and music events.
    It is possible to find reviews in journals dated before 1940 through subject bibliographies.
  • Infomedia
    InfoMedia is a large newspaper database with full-text access to a number of Danish newspapers. The articles date back to around 1990 – reviews are included.
  • Tidsskrift.dk
    Database of Danish journals. Among others, the database includes Historie, Jyske Samlinger, and Historisk Tidsskrift.
