NVivo Course

Course Description

NVivo is a program developed for qualitative data management and analysis. It is primarily used to organize, analyze, and identify patterns in qualitative data, such as interviews and observations, whether they are in text, audio, video, or images. NVivo provides you with tools to code and categorize data, perform text and content analysis, as well as visualize and present the results of your analysis. NVivo enables in-depth analysis of complex data, allowing you to discover patterns, themes, and connections that may otherwise be hidden.

Two types of courses are offered. Enrollment courses, which can be found in the library's course calendar, and group courses, which are arranged with the instructor of the group and are listed in the teaching plan. The enrollment course is a basic introduction to NVivo lasting 2 or 3 hours, while the group courses include the introductory course and a later workshop for those who use NVivo and wish to get assistance with their NVivo projects. All courses are held in person.

Get started with NVivo 15 - step by step

1 - Create a Lumivero account

NVivo 15 must be activated upon login, so you need to create an account at lumivero.com if you do not already have one. It is important that you use your AU student email if you want to request a free NVivo student license from AU-IT. Once you have created your Lumivero account, you will automatically receive a 14-day trial license, which starts when you first log in to NVivo 15.

IMPORTANT - Do not request your AU student license until you have created your Lumivero account! Otherwise, it will become a mess.

  1. Go to this link - NVivo
  2. Enter your name and email - request a confirmation code.
  3. Then create a password and accept the terms of use.
  4. On the next page, select "Academic," enter the organization, and AU's website.
  5. Once you have completed creating your account, you will either access your Lumivero dashboard or need to log in at Lumivero.com.
    1. From there, select NVivo and then download the latest version to your computer.

2 - Download NVivo 15

To download NVivo 15, you need to log in to Lumivero via MyLumivero, and in the start menu, select NVivo. You can only download the version of NVivo that is compatible with your computer and the latest version of NVivo.

If you are a Mac user, the following minimum requirements apply[1]:

  • Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i5, Core i7, Xeon, M1, or M2 processor
  • Mac OS 12 Monterey
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 1280 x 800 screen resolution
  • 8 GB SSD of available disk space—or more depending on data storage needs

Please note that NVivo 15 only works with the latest 3 versions of macOS.

If you are a Windows user, the following minimum requirements apply[2]:

  • 2.0 GHz dual-core processor (64-bit)
  • 4 GB RAM (sufficient if other applications on the computer do not have high memory use)
  • 1680 x 1050 screen resolution
  • Microsoft Windows 10
  • Approximately 5 GB of available hard-disk space—or more depending on data storage needs

3 - Installation

Once NVivo 15 has been downloaded to your computer, locate the installation file in your downloads folder and double-click on it.

NVivo 15 will then be installed, and it is important that you allow NVivo to download Microsoft SQL Server Express; without it, NVivo will not function. NVivo will check if you have Microsoft SQL and will ask for your permission to download and install it—approve this, otherwise NVivo will not work!

In general, you should grant NVivo all the permissions it needs; otherwise, the program simply will not run.

4 - Start NVivo 15

The first time you start NVivo 15, you will be prompted to activate your trial license by logging into your MyLumivero account. Once you have done this, you can begin using NVivo 15.

If you later request an AU-IT student license, you must deactivate your trial license or allow it to expire before activating the AU-IT license. There cannot be two active licenses at the same time.

5 - Get an AU student license for NVivo 15

At this link to AU-IT, you can request a student license for NVivo that is valid for a very long time.

https://studerende.au.dk/it-support/software/nvivo

The text is not updated at AU-IT. The NVivo 15 license is free! If you have not used AU's webshop before, you will need to register first with your student email.

You will receive a confirmation from AU-IT after you have requested your student license, but it may take 24 hours or more before the student license is linked to your MyLumivero account. So please be patient!

You can check in MyLumivero if you have received your student license, and if you do not have it within 48 hours, please write to bss.it@au.dk, as it is AU that issues the licenses, not the library.

6 - Start with some reading

If you would like to know more about how NVivo is used and what it can and cannot do, you can read the two sections "Workflow Overview" and "Getting Started" in NVivo's Help for Windows and Mac.

NVivo's help is very useful and explains what the various functions can do and how they are used—it is a good place to go if you encounter any issues.

NVivo Practice Data

You can download the practice materials for the course before we start.

The practice materials are in a zip file, which needs to be unpacked before you can use the files.

On Windows, right-click on the zip file and select "Extract All," then click through. The unpacked files will be located in a new folder with the same name as the zip file.

On Mac, the zip file will automatically unpack when you click on it, and the unpacked files will be in a new folder with the same name as the zip file.

Save the practice materials in a place where you can easily find them—e.g., on your desktop.

Python script for Transcriber CSV files

In the box below, you can download a zip file containing a Python script that can transform a CSV file from Transcriber of your interview into a TXT file that can be auto-coded in NVivo.

To use the Python script, you must have Python installed on your computer. Python is a free programming language that can be downloaded from this link.

After you have installed Python, you can use the script by placing it in the same folder as the CSV file from Transcriber and then clicking on the script. It features a simple menu where you can see all the CSV files in the folder, and you enter the number of the file. The script will close automatically when it is finished and will save the formatted TXT file with the same name as the CSV file, adding a date.
